The late Hayden B. Renwick became Associate Dean in the Office for Student Counseling (OSC) in UNC’s College of Arts & Sciences in 1973. In addition to providing academic counseling, Dean Renwick created two major initiatives to support OSC’s mission. The first was a peer-mentoring program that assigned an academically successful upperclassman, or “Minority Advisor,” to each first-year African American and American Indian student. The second initiative was an annual awards program recognizing all African American and American Indian undergraduates with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. To honor his efforts we have the annual Hayden B. Renwick Academic Awards Ceremony.

At this ceremony, students that fall under the following criteria will be recognized:
  1. Currently enrolled undergraduate students who identify as African American, American Indian, or multiracial with at least one of those identities that have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
  2. Currently enrolled senior undergraduate students who identify as African American, American Indian, or multiracial with at least one of those identities that have a term GPA of 3.0 or greater for every term including summers throughout their UNC academic career
